Digital Video -
if a picture is worth a thousand, make it move...
Unites my creative passion and storytelling gifts with a yen for things
technical. DV production has become a vehicle for telling not my story but the
unique and powerful stories of people and ministries that communicate God's love
in our hurting world.
Heart and Soul has become more than a name for me - it's an expression of my
life mission: to touch, inspire, and release the Spirit in all God's children.
Behind the camera, and in the production room, I get to pay extraordinary
attention to the miraculous way God's love and grace flows through us all.

The PD 150 is a souped-up VX-2000 that adds the
following features: black-and-white viewfinder (easier to focus), settable
time code, XLR audio adapter, 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, miniDV or DVCam
recording and 12 bit or 16 bit audio recording.

The DSR-PD150 provides high quality acquisition in the
DVCAM component digital format, as well as in DV, allowing up to forty
minutes recording on one tape Mini DVCAM tape or over a full hour in the DV
mode. |
It features
three newly developed 1/3 inch 380K pixel CCDs that allow two
scanning modes: 480 progressive (for still) or interlaced (for video). These
new CCDs also provide high quality acquisition with increased resolution and
sensitivity at reduced noise and vertical smear. The DSR-PD150 also features
complete Professional Audio functions with
two built-in XLR inputs.
It features a
built-in slot for a flash memory card or MemoryStick for still
image storage. Up to 988 JPEG pictures can be stored in one 64 MB
MemoryStick. The stored images can be mixed or keyed to the live image
allowing logo insertion and/or mix effects. The built-in electronic zoom
lens features Autofocus and SuperSteadyShot with a high MTF 12X high MTF
quality optical lens with
manual Zoom, Focus and Iris control.
A high resolution (500 lines) B&W viewfinder and a color swing out bright
color LCD panel are included to make shooting a breeze.
I mount it on a Bogen 3036 (475) Tripod
and 3063 QR Fluid Head. |

Sony 3-CCD TRV-900
My first digital camera - seven years young and a high-quality flexible
workhorse. You can
find out more about this model than you'll ever want
to know at John Beale's Using
the Sony DCR-TRV900 Camcorder website. Most consumer digital cameras
have only one CCD chip that serves to process the three color channels. I use a Sony ECMHS1 Camcorder Zoom mic that mounts directly to the
intelligent shoe on top of the camera, as well as an
XLR to 3.5 mm sound plug adapter/transformer
(to plug in a regular microphone). |
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (400D)
You This 10.1 Megapixel digital SLR camera produces
stunning stills I enjoy using in productions where I cannot capture
video.
I bought the kit from B&H with a Canon 18-55mm lens and 2 GB flash card. I
added a Canon Zoom telephoto EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilizer lens and
a 430EX speedlite. Both lenses autofocus. |

Dual channel camera mount (hot shoe) wireless microphone system - 200UPR
63 channel UHF receiver (uses 6 AA batteries which last 8 hours) and 2
10BT Body pack transmitters with EX-503 Lavalier microphones (1 9V battery
lasts 8 hours).
This kit came with a 3.5mm to dual XLR cable and a 3.5mm to 3.5 mm (1/8
in) cable. |
Two
Audio-Technica Pro 70 cardioid lavalier microphones, designed for vocal or instrument capt uring
in recording or sound reinforcement applications. The frequency response
favors the mid-range frequencies of instruments and vocals while
minimizing noise registering at high and low frequencies.
A low frequency
roll-off switch further reduces low frequency noise due to hum, wind etc.
The provided UM3 power supply provides phantom power with a single 1.5V AA
battery or external phantom power source. The UM3 provides a standard
3-pin XLR output connection to mixers, preamplifiers, cameras etc. The mic
comes with a 6ft line.
|
The
Sennheiser ME 66
is a shot gun microphone capsule designed for use with the K6 and K6P
powering modules. It is especially suitable for reporting, film and
broadcast location applications and for picking up quiet signals in
noisy or acoustically live environments as it discriminates against
sound not emanating from the main pick-up direction. Too large for the
TRV-900,
this is my all-purpose go-to microphone for the PD-150. It's
incredibly versatile,
unobtrusive and provides
excellent sound quality.

 The heart of any NLE
(Non-linear editing) system is a fast computer
with lots of fast-accessing
hard drive space. I use an AMD dual CORE processor
computer (Athlon 64 X2 4200+ MP 2.2 GHz processors) fitted out with a Canopus DV
Storm editing system, 140 GB of system storage and 480 GB of media storage (4
RAID configured 120 GB Western Digital Hard Drives). The computer runs on
2 GB of DDR ECC Registered RAM. In 2007, I added a 1.5 TB Maxtor external
hard drive (Firewire) for a total 2 TB storage for digital media.
The Media Drives are where you capture, store, and play back raw digital
video. At
4 megabytes per second,
DV burns up drive space very fast and requires flawless data throughput from
the system to capture and playback properly on a computer. Any NLE system
should always have drives separate from the "Primary Drive" to write and
read video files to and from for optimal performance and reliability.
My system uses 4 ATA 100 RAID configured Western Digital 7200 RPM ATA 120
120GB drives for all "Secondary" media access and storage. These units allow
for ATA100 RAID configuration in a 480 Gigabyte size. Standard DV requires
approximately 16 GB per hour of storage space. So each 120 GB drive has over
7.5 hours of video storage capacity.
The Promise model Fast Track TX2 controller card offers RAID 0 stripping of
up to 4 drives. This combination of controller and drives consistently
yields
60 to 80+ MB per second sustained read/writes.

This is a double-deck VCR that combines the two most popular prosumer
formats—DV and S-VHS—in one machine. The WV-DR7 is designed to facilitate
work in both a DV and analog video world and to maximize quality when
converting from digital to analog and from analog to digital. Product
literature says the deck introduces extremely high-quality duplication from
DV to S-VHS (and the other way around). This deck accepts both mini DV and
full-size DV cassettes and records to standard play and long play modes.
The DV deck is DV in/out (4-pin firewire/i-LINK) with up to 500 lines
resolution. It uses the DV standard 4:1:1 sampling with a 5:1 compression
ratio. The audio is digital PCM sound with the choice of either two 12-bit
stereo tracks (32khz) or a 16-bit (48Khz) track for high-fidelity DAT
quality recording with 90db or better dynamic range. The S-VHS deck is NTSC
color, EIA standard, and 400 lines resolution. It offers S-VHS ET for
recording S-VHS quality video on a VHS cassette. The audio is a HiFi stereo
recording system. Additional features include a jog shuttle, control L (LANC),
and crystal clear freeze frame.

(This deck is available only in Japan, but costs half of comparable
quality decks sold by Sony in America. Safer Seas sells it with an English
translation of the manual and a 120 to 100 Volt transformer.)

NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display introduces a number of image-enhancing
capabilities including a patented SuperBright Diamondtron flat aperture
grille. For
increased brightness and contrast in viewing graphics, animation
and video, you can engage the SuperBright mode
of these displays with the
touch of an up-front button. The SuperBright characteristics of these new
models are a result of a more efficient electron gun that increases the
amount of energy that is transferred to the CRT's phosphors, thereby
producing images that are more than twice as bright as those of previous CRT
monitors. These models continue to deliver the advantages of Diamondtron
flat aperture grille CRT technology, which include superior focus,
brightness uniformity and color saturation.
NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display pioneered its new ClearFlat shadow mask
CRT in the FE990. ClearFlat models offer a virtually flat screen that
generates less glare and reflection than conventional curved-screen CRT
monitors, reducing eyestrain for additional comfort and enhanced
productivity.

One
card supports two VGA monitors (converting one DVI connector to VGA).
Also has S-Video out for HDTV signal. Dedicated video hardware reduces
CPU utilization and improves overall system performance. PCI Express (x16) support
accelerates video editing by speeding up data transfer rates (compared to
AGP 8X and PCI buses).
The Ti4600 ChipSet becomes the 3-D rendering engine for Canopus Xplode 3-D
transition effects package. You save rendering hours using Xplode's
pre-built transitions instead of Adobe After Effects for complex 3-D
transitions.

Since picture quality displays differently on a computer and TV monitor, a
production monitor allows you to see what you're producing as you produce it.
With new features such as a picture improvement IC and a short cut operation
menu, Sony's PVM-14N6U 14" (13" viewable) Trinitron Color Monitor is a great
small studio choice. Other features include 500 TV lines of resolution,
compatibility with four color standards (NTSC/PAL/SECAM/NTSC 4.43),
on-screen menus with a choice of five languages: English, German, French,
Italian, and Spanish, beam current feedback, a metal cabinet, universal
power supply 100-240V (UL listed for 120V/50Hz only), and 4:3/16:9
switchable aspect ratio.
Features: Composite, Y/C and RGB
inputs; Accepts external sync; Color temperature D65 (6500K).Back

This ultra-compact eight-channel mixer is ideal for
project studios or club gigs, or can be used as a MIDI mixer, sub mixer,
monitor mixer, or as a tool for level and impedance matching.
The MX802A gives you 4 mono channels with
microphone and line inputs plus peak LEDs and 3-band EQ. The 2 additional
stereo channels are ideal for keyboards and MIDI equipment. And your 2-track
machine can easily be connected via the RCA inputs.
Two aux send/return (you can choose pre-fader or post-fader operation for
aux 2). Low-cut filters allow you to remove almost entirely low-frequency
noise, without losing too much
bass in your mix.
It does an equally
good job as a keyboard mixer, sub-mixer, or monitor desk, and feels right at
home in broadcasting, video, or film studios or on the road.

These high-end multimedia flat panel speakers use Monsoon's Planar Focus
technology. The set consists of two 12.5watt dipole radiating flatpanel
satellites, a 25watt 5.25" subwoofer, and a small volume/mute controller.
The main difference between the Flat Panel and traditional speakers (other
than they are less than 1" thick) is that they are composed entirely of
magnetic materials; no paper or plastic cones. That technology is how the
size and distortion are kept minimal.
