This John Hall was literate in contrast to John Hall, who was not. John had a brother, Hugh Hall, after whom he named his second son. John Hall was a justice in Prince George County (1736-37). He is said to have been born in Scotland.
John lived in Amelia County about 1750-1762 and was then in Edgecomb County, North Carolina.
Hall secured a patent for 651 acres in Brunswick County on the north side of Briery Creek 9 February 1737/8 and added 1,800 acres by patent on the north side of the Meherrin River 15 March 1744/5.
His father-in-law, for natural love and affection, gave John 1,197 acres in Amelia County on the forks of Deep and Little creeks in 1740. John held this tract until he sold it to Isham Thompson in 1765. John was then living in Edgecomb County, North Carolina, and had left a power of attorney to his son of the same name to sell the land.
In 1747 William Watson sold John 3,385 acres on Sweathouse Creek. The next year John sold this tract in two parcels: 2,715 acres to James Munford and 670 acres to Wood Jones.
In 1760 John bought 590 acres on Deep Creek from his brother-in-law Hugh Miller. He divided this land in half and gave it to sons-in-law, David Holt and Joseph Hardaway. Ann, wife of John Hall, relinquished her dower right in the land.
John was still in Edgecomb County in 1777 when he gave a power of attorney to Stith Bolling in Amelia County.
