According to 1860 Virginia New Kent County census record pg 906, at Nathaniel age 5 and Southey age 28 lived with the family of a physician named Leonard Crump age 42 with no females named Savage living with them. According to 1870 Virginia New Kent County Black Creek Township census record pg 497, at age 16 Nathaniel was a machinist living in a unit that appears to be a jobsite. 1870 Virginia New Kent County St. Peters Township census record lists Southey as a farmer, head of household with a Thomas Coyanes from Ireland, wife and son living
with him keeping house and helping him on the farm.
Southey L Savage (1832 - ?) with son Nathaniel (age 5) in the home of a physician Leonard Crump with Emily, Dr. Crump?s wife and their 4 children. (Ref 1860 Virginia Census New Kent County pg 906). When 16 years old Nathaniel was living in a household with 7 other workers (he was a machinist) with a family of 5 others (Page Brown head of household) (Ref. 1870 Virginia Census New Kent Co. Black Creek Township) That same year Southey was head of a household with farm laborer from Ireland Thomas Coyanes, his wife Margaret Coyanes housekeeper and their son Patrick. Southey?s father is believed to be Nathaniel L. Savage (?-?) who had a wife, 3 daughters and 3 sons (Ref 1840 Virginia Census New Kent Co pg 100) [Ed Hyland 4 Mar 1998 e-mail]

Southey L. Savage was Deputy Sheriff of New Kent County when 18 years of
age (see 1850 census). He moved to Richmond and married a Mrs. Gary.
