(when I was a child, she told me about seeing the Confederate flag lowered for the last time in her town when the local Confederate forces surrendered in 1865. So I heard about the end of the Civil War from an eyewitness!)
Obituary:
"She was active in the cultural, civic and church development of the town to which she and her husband came immediately after the War Between the States in which he served with the Confederate Army.
Her husband was circuit clerk here for 18 years and practiced law in Birmingham.
Mrs. McCarthy was a member of the Independent Presbyterian Church, and for many years a member of the Birmingham Music Club and the Old Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Assn.

BTW, I think John and Ada had a son, named or called "Jack" who changed his name because Stein sounded too Jewish. A family story has it that he worked as a shoe salesman. He had an opportunity to become manager of the shoe store, but the owner said that with a name like "Stein" he couldn't promote him. Too Jewish sounding. If he wanted to be the manager Jack would have to change his name. And he did. I never knew his new name.
