[86]
Marge was born almost 80 years ago, on August 21, 1923, in Fresno, California. That was a good day, not good times for the Stiths. Before they brought Marge home from the hospital, their house --the house that daddy built-- burned.
Dad was a coal miner and by the time John was born, in 1926, and Jane, in 1927, the family was living in a shack in Republic, near Birmingham. I say a shack because, so the story goes, there were holes in the wall big enough to throw a cat through.
Marge was moved to Gadsden when she was 6 years old, in November 1929. Those were hard times for almost everybody. November 1929, one month after the stock market crashed and a lot of rich people became poor people overnight. And quit.
She grew up in Gadsden, on Hoke Street. Before the fire --yes, there was another fire, on Jan. 19, 1931, mother's 32st birthday. Anyway, before the fire, Marge and Jane slept in the living room, on a leather, pull out couch that made into a bed. After the fire, dad built on two more bedrooms. Marge, Jane, and Alene, she was born in 1930, shared the girls' room. John and, later on, Pop and Dave bunked together tin the boy's room.
Marge attended Gadsden High school, and she was a little sister's nightmare. She was good and smart. Or was it, smart and good. It was another seven years before Alene arrived but she still got The Question: ""Is MARJORIE STITH your sister?"
Made you want to say, "My dear lady. Not only was she my sister, I'm wearinge her handmedowns."
Anyway, Marge graduated in 1939, when she was 15 years old. She was double promoted once, and, in those days, public school has 11 grades, not 12.
From there she went to Alabama State College for Women in Montevallo, Alamaba. She graduated in 1943. Much later the college would honor her as Alumna of the Year.
We were in the middle of World War II when Marge got out of college and went to work teaching Home Economics. She was pretty good at economics but not much at sewing. Thanks to Marge, there may be some old ladies in Vernon, Alabama, who never learned to hem a dress.
From Vernon she went to Louieville, Kentucky, to what was then called Training School and what is now called seminary. She got there with a scholarship from the Woman's Missionary Union of Alabama, in 1945, and graduated in May 1947.
Our mother, Alice Cameron Stith, died of cancer a month later, on June 15, 1947. Pop was 13. Dave was 7. I was 5. And Marge came home to the farm on Rabbit Town Road, be a surrogate mom, for 20 months, until Dad married our second mother, Virgie Wynn Gunn, on Feb. 14, 1949.
When Dad remarried Marge went to Montgomery to work at the Alabama WMU. She was much better at this than teaching sewing.
Ten years later, when she was in her mid-30s, Marge did a 180. She left WMU and returned to school in 1959, to Florida State University where she earned a masters and a Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Relations.
When she graduated, in 1961, she joined the faculty a Kansas State University in Manhatten, Kansas as an assistant professor. Before she took the job she warned them, "I don't do sewing." They hired her anyway. Within a few years she was made department head and, in 1965, full professor. She worked hard at getting sewing out of the curriculum and almost succeeded.
That same year, in 1965, she went to India to spent six months on an U.S. government education project. On her way to India she had planned to stopped over in Hawaii to visit Alene and Jack. Three or four hours before take off, she broke her wrist. So, did she call and say, "I can't come?" Nope, not Marge. Wet cast and half dressed, she left on time.
Marge is a church leaders, that, many of you know. And she's traveled the world.
But also has written a number of books, including:
- Helping Others Learn About Jesus (1962)
- Un' der stand' ing Chill' dren (1969)
- Middle Childhood Behavior and Development (1974)
- Middle Childhood Behavior and Development (Second Edition, 1980)
- I Like My Teacher You Know Why? (1992)
- Snowy Days and Sunny Days (1993)
- Making a Difference A Fifty-Year History of Kansas-Nebraska Southern Baptists (1995)
She's coauthored a text book about middle school children that was used for a long time a Kansas State and three children's books.
And she's had a life outside academia.
She learn to ride horseback, English sytle, thankyou.
And racketball.
And tried to learn golf. That fell by the wasyside when she kept hittintg the ball at the wrontg wong hole.
Marge retired from Kansas State in 1987 .... And moved to Charlotte in 1997
And since then she's used her time wisely.
She loves to travel so....she has made trips to:
* Mexico, Guatemala, all the countries in South America except Uruguay.
* Greece
* China
* Malawi, Africa
* Germany
* England, Italy and France and more
Somewhere along here, she was honored to be the Alumna of the Year at Ala. Women's College.
And if you think she has become passive about staying involved since coming to Charlotte, never fear.
* The multitude of activities she has discovered to do when visitors come would impress the Chamber of Commerce. The list even includes going out to the Speedway and riding around the track in a race car.
* A docent at the Mint Museum
* Co-teaches an adult women's Sunday School class
* Elected and serves as a deacon at Providence Baptist ( was the first woman deacon in her church and County in Kansas)
* A volunteer at the Presbyterian Hospital every Wednesday morning
* Presents a Bible Study to a group of residents at a nursing home once a month
* Participates in the tutoring program helping children from Berry School two afternoons a week throughout the school year
* Tutors Spanish speaking adults in English every Sunday afternoon for 9 months a year
* An avid reader, she belongs to a once a month book club
* Is a member of a Bible Workbench group that meets once a week
* Working on her credits to be the best Sock Monkey Doll maker in Mecklenburg Country.
* Has learned to play bridge and plays a pretty nice game, and will play anytime and ......
* She still can't sew.
