[3614] Description: (Belmont Park MC)
[959]
We do not know William Hewlett Stith's father or mother.
VMI (http://www.vmi.edu/archives/archiverosters/Search.asp) lists his son, William Hume Stith's paternal grandfather as Bassett Stith.
Col. Bassett Stith (1765 - 1817) - (IRN 1747, Anderson, Lt. Col. John, Capt. John, Jr., Maj. John, Sr.) and Mary Long had 10 children, and lived in Halifax, Halifax, NC, according to Dr. Christopher Johnston. The Stith Family. (William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine). Vol. 21, p. 192. Their firstborn son was William Anderson Stith, who is buried in Raleigh, Wake, NC, according to Stith, Kenneth. Genealogy of the VA Stiths. (http://stithvalley.com/scottfam/stithfam/johnsks.htm).
A.C. Gordon lists a William Anderson Stith as the fourth child of Col. Bassett Stith and his wife, Mary Long. This William, according to Gordon, died unmarried.
Carol Middleton's site, Stith Grooms in VA (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmddlton/sthmrs1.html) lists both Willaim Stith and Rebecca Harris from Richmond, VA.
Another connection might be through William B. Stith, b. 1777 (IRN 0560, Richard, Sr., Drury, Jr., Drury, Sr., MAJ John, Sr.) and Nancy Jones. Another researcher e-mailed me that this line all moved to KY.
Henrico Parish History p. 508 notes that the name Stith is historic in Virginia. Robert Bolling who married first Jane Rolfe, the granddaughter of Pocahontas, the "gentle Indian Princess," is second Anne, daughter of John Stith. The first record of the name is in Charles City County.
Tredegar Iron Works was Scottish and might be a connection.
