Movie Lists

Entertaining and thought-provoking. We watch mostly movies made for kids, but every now and again we see a flick that takes us someplace.

We'd love to hear your suggestions.

Groundhog Day (1993 - Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell) What if every day were the same, day-in and day-out, until you were able to discover something about yourself and the world you didn't know when you woke up? Beautiful love scene in the coffee shop.

The Mission (1986 - Robert De Niro Jeremy Irons) When love meets expediency, we discover the hard and difficult Way of the Cross. One of the best reconciliation scenes we've ever seen.

Romero (1989 - Raul Julia, Richard Jordan) True tale of the power of love in the face of brutality. Here's the story of how the army America backed brutalized the people of El Salvador, and how those who followed Christ and an unlikely Archbishop (who wouldn't play the puppet) overcame all odds.

Leap of Faith (1992 - Steve Martin, Debra Winger) Not just another Elmer Gantry story. God wins! For anyone who has ever felt like a fake but had to go on anyway.

Pleasantville (1998 - Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels) Fantasy that looks back at the not-so-good old days and celebrates the heroism of learning how to be the person God created you to be.

Rainman (1988 - Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise) Two brothers take a journey across America to find a connection stronger than the physical and emotional disabilities that pretent to separate them.

Bladerunner (1982 - Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer) Future dreamscape where two people learn to live and love with whatever time they are given. Asks a lot of haunting questions about why we have been given life and how we learn to live knowing we have to die.

The Natural (1984 - Robert Redford, Robert Duvall) The tale of a comeback. Great line: "I believe we have two lives: the one we learn with and the one we live with after that."

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969 - Paul Newman, Robert Redford) Entertaining look at the lives and loves of two men who spend their lives chasing after a prize they cannot catch and running from a demon they cannot escape.

Star Wars Trilogy (IV: A New Hope, 1977; V: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980; VI: Return of the Jedi, 1983 - Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford) Space fantasy, adventure film, but also a parable about the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

The Matrix (1999, Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne) Futuristic fantasy about the necessity of embracing and living into (if not necessarily understanding) our destiny day by day. Also about the great potential that waits to be born in us all, if we (or others who care about us) can only believe.

As Good as it Gets (1997, Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt) Romance full of grace and understanding enacted by two masters of the trade.
